Charles Haynes and his family first met Meher Baba in 1958 during the Sahavas at Meher Spiritual Center. Charles attended the East-West Gathering in 1962 and the Great Darshan in 1969. He served on the Meher Center board for many years and currently serves on the board of Meher Fund. In his professional life, Charles is vice president of the Newseum Institute and founding director of the Religious Freedom Center. He is the author or co-author of eight books including Meher Baba, The Awakener.

Christopher Wilson grew up in Columbia, SC and first learned about Meher Baba through a teacher at his high school. He first visited Meher Spiritual Center on May 21, 1987 – the same date on which Charles had met Meher Baba at the Center in 1958. Christopher earned his doctorate in Art History and has published widely on depictions of St. Teresa of Avila and other Carmelites in European and Latin American art. He teaches at Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, MD and serves on the board of Sheriar Foundation.

Christopher and Charles were married on December 6, 2014, after twenty-five years together. They published Norina’s Gift: Messages of Meher Baba Received Through Princess Norina Matchabelli and continue to work with Norina’s and Nadine Tolstoy’s archival materials. They live in Alexandria, VA with their two dogs, Jefferson and Jimmy, and their parrot named José.

Two very special visual presentations will be scheduled on Saturday (see program for times):

May 21 — A Date That Was "Meant to Be"
Elizabeth Patterson would often say, “Dates are important with Baba.” This talk explores one date in the life of Charles and Christopher, a window into how Beloved Baba works in the lives of His lovers.

"Still, still with Thee": Norina Matchabelli and the Cost of Discipleship Using materials from Norina’s archives, Charles and Christopher examine how Norina’s work for Meher Baba and her participation in His suffering exemplify “being is dying by loving.”

On Sunday, Charles will present Meher Baba and Humility: Lessons in Freedom Learned from Life with Meher Baba

Location:
Rosewoods Meher Rest, home of Ron Lansing and Miriam Rose, is an urban natural setting located in East Portland. Directions here.

Ron and Miriam say, “Rosewoods Meher Rest is the name we have given to the property Meher Baba brought into our lives in April 2012, exactly a year after we returned from our three-year stay at the Oklahoma Heartland Center. We are holding this land and our home open for spiritually rooted personal and community activities that Baba might bring here. We formally dedicated the property to Avatar Meher Baba with the support of the Oregon Baba Lover community in April 2013.”

Rosewoods Meher Rest is a wondrous acre on the edge of southeast Portland and at the foot of Powell Butte Nature Park. The land slopes gently up the hill to the north, a rough gem adjoining the wild cedars and firs, and seasonal stream of the park next door to the east.

Rosewoods Meher Rest has old fruit trees, walnut trees and big fir and cedar of its own. A wild undergrowth of high grass and blackberries covers the upper half acre. There is room for outdoor group meetings, quiet personal spaces, a fire (dhuni) ring and a camping meadow.

Climate: Usually sunny and warm, could be low 70s to mid 80s. Evenings cool. It can rain at any time in Oregon.

Activities: Music, workshop, morning arti, dhuni, games, and the toddy shop.

Children’s Craft & Play Area: For the young and young-at-heart, toys and craft supplies will be available in the children's play area, but there will be no designated childcare-walla. Parents will be responsible for their children at all times.

Meals: Saturday lunch and dinner will be provided as well as Sunday lunch. If you have special dietary needs, you must bring your special items with you, breakfast on your own. Plates and utensils will be provided. Personal cups/mug are recommended (Please sign up for clean-up crew with David Defauw).

On-Site Facilities: We plan to have eight tent sites available for campers overnight Friday and Saturday. Toilets will be on-site and water will be available. The sites are all together on the middle property meadow. Tents will need to be closer together than in past years because of the limited space. There may be trees for hammocks also. Please contact Ron to save a site.

Car Pooling: Please make efforts to car pool where possible. Parking is limited.

“To penetrate into the essence of all being and significance, and to release the fragrance of that inner attainment for the benefit and guidance of others, by expressing in the world of forms, truth, love, purity and beauty — this is the sole game that has any intrinsic and absolute worth.”
